When an injury first happens , make sure to be checked by a physician to rule out fractures or torn ligaments but if only a sprain/strain injury then RICE is the first protocol to follow (rest, ice, compression, elevate).
The next step in injury management is getting an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Tomlinson will review your history and mechanism of injury, take x-rays if needed or possibly send you for an MRI. The injury specialist will then plan and implement the treatment required.
Our first goal is to decrease or eliminate your pain and swelling using acupuncture and laser therapy. The next goal is to begin to get passive movement (motion) to the injured area as quickly as safely possible- quick restoration of motion leads to quicker recovery.Once pain and any swelling is reduced, the treatment will begin to involve more manual therapy and exercises. At this point, the physician will set exercises to target specific goals that will help solve the problems.
Exercise is a vital part of the rehabilitation process for most injuries. Exercises are included in rehabilitation programs to ensure the injury site returns to a fully functional state and/or to ensure that the original cause of the injury is eliminated.
